Online resources to support women’s health practitioners

WHO

Women’s Health in the North (WHIN) primary role is advocacy; providing high quality resources and training to people in partner organisations. A central point for Women’s Health in the North evidence base and discussion in the areas of:

  • prevention of violence against women

  • sexual and reproductive health

  • communities affected by genital mutilation

  • gender equity

  • financial literacy

NEED

The website is an essential component of their advocacy and service-delivery. WHIN wanted a website with personality. The website needed to be an effective arm of WHIN's activism on behalf of the women of the northern metropolitan area.

OUTCOME

Responsive design: A mobile phone is the preferred means of Internet access for anyone who feels their security to be at risk, because it is more private than other devices. We must make sure that we serve the needs of anyone at risk, even if our aim is to redirect them immediately to a service provider.

Overcoming distance: The Internet can never replace the magic of face-to-face encounters, but we can make sure that WHIN's web presence is personal in style, speaking naturally to its audiences, and promoting opportunities for people to gather, learn, and contribute. So in designing the website, as well as raising the profile of the organisation and the events WHIN offers, we looked for ways to enable people to continue the conversation after they have attended a WHIN event.

We worked with WHIN to refine their communication, so that the intended audiences feel that the site has really understood their concerns and interests, and delivered valuable content at the appropriate point in their visit.
